Travel to Iraq
Mountain plateaus. Reed-woven mudhifs. Sacred ground. Iraq is a land of uncharted territory.
Whether you want to travel to Iraq’s vibrant pilgrimage sites or wild mountains, this country rewards those who visit.
Nestled between the Tigris and the Euphrates, the Arab marshes have flourished for over 6,000 years. Here, the Maʻdān, or Marsh Arabs, live on marshy islets among wallowing water buffalo. Upstream in Baghdad, Iraqi people are adapting Mesopotamian traditions to a more modern way of life.
Iraq travel advice
We never organise expeditions to areas of Iraq that international governments deem to be on high-alert.
South of Baghdad, the ancient Mesopotamian valley offers less risk and more reward. Featuring Babylonian ruins and a certain Great Ziggurat, this region is a paradise for adventurers. We organise private tours here, as well as in Iraqi Kurdistan and Baghdad.
Things to do in Iraq
Visit Iraq’s Mecca. Each year, Karbala attracts millions of Muslim pilgrims from across the world. The golden-domed Imam Husayn Shrine is their final destination.
Visit a Biblical building. The Ziggurat of Ur was built almost six thousand years ago. Now that’s old. This legendary structure used to lie on the shores of the Persian Gulf, but now coastline shifts have moved it hundreds of miles inland.
Follow in the footsteps of Roald Dahl. In 1940, he took an award-winning photograph of Taq Kasra. Though a lot may have changed in Iraq since then, this unsupported arch – the largest on earth – still hangs in the sky.
